This traditional art form is used to form complex designs, set into floors, walls, furniture or small inlay picture designs on boxes, caskets, tombs and ceremonial regalia.

A typical form of architectural ornamentation, Cosmatesque is another traditional art, which includes decorative designs based on the arrangement of fragments in geometric patterns. Inspired by the art of Medieval Rome, Cosmatesque is used in conjunction with plain or sculptured marble surfaces.
